When the crew of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise receives a distress signal from the planet Talos IV, Captain Christopher Pike and a landing party beam down to the planet surface to investigate. After discovering a group of survivors from a missing scientific expedition, Pike soon becomes enamoured of a beautiful girl named Vina. However, except for Vina, the survivors are merely illusions created by the Talosians, alien beings who live in a secret base hidden beneath the planet surface. Although originally a strong race, decades of illusory indulgence have caused the Talosians to physically atrophy, and so they have lured the Enterprise and her crew to their world in order to use them to rebuild and repopulate their barren world - and they believe that Pike is the perfect male to create a healthier and more powerful race for them, by mating with Vina. The Talosians use their illusory powers to make Vina of interest to the captain, by presenting her as a Rigellian princess in distress, a green Orion slave-woman, and then as a loving and kind companion. But when Pike refuses the girl’s advances the Talosians are forced to entice his first officer, Number One, and Yeoman Colt to their base, hoping to use them as potential mates. Can Pike resist their feminine charms, or will he be doomed to spend the rest of his life as breeding stock in an alien zoo..?
